Marrakech to Agafay desert: getting there
Marrakech to Agafay desert: 45 minutes by road. Car, taxi or hotel transfer, no bus, and how to time a half-day, sunset or dinner trip.

The Agafay desert is 45 minutes by road from central Marrakech, heading south-west towards Lalla Takerkoust. To go from Marrakech to the Agafay desert, you drive, take a taxi, or add a return transfer from your hotel or riad when you book; there is no public bus.
That short distance is what makes an Agafay desert day trip work: you can leave after breakfast and be back for lunch, or leave in the afternoon and eat dinner out there. This guide covers the practical side — the drive, the ways to get there, how long each kind of outing takes and when to set off. For the desert itself and every outing that runs there, see our Agafay desert page.
How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
The Agafay desert is 45 minutes by road from central Marrakech. The road leaves the city to the south-west, in the direction of Lalla Takerkoust and its lake, and the stony plateau rises beside it. Our base is out there, and every outing we run starts from it.
Count an hour and a half of driving for the round trip. There is no flight, no overnight stay and no long transfer, which is why a desert afternoon fits inside a three-day stay in the city.
Know what you are driving to. Agafay is a stony desert: pale, folded hills and dry riverbeds, with the High Atlas behind them, often with snow on the tops into spring. There are no sand dunes. The orange dunes people picture when they hear “Moroccan desert” are in the Sahara, near Merzouga, about nine hours from Marrakech by road — a trip of two nights at least, not a day out.
How do you get from Marrakech to the Agafay desert?
There are three ways to go from Marrakech to the Agafay desert: drive yourself, take a taxi, or add a return transfer when you book an outing.
| Option | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your own car | 45 minutes on the road south-west of the city | The road is fine for any car; the meeting point and a map link are on your confirmation |
| Taxi | The usual choice for visitors who do not drive | Settle the return journey with the driver before he leaves |
| Return transfer | From your hotel or riad, added when you book | For a fee, shown as its own line, not included in the activity price |
| Public bus | None | There is no public bus to Agafay |
By car. The road is fine for any car, so a rental or your own vehicle is all you need. You do not have to know the plateau: the exact meeting point, with a map link, comes with your booking confirmation, and it is also mapped on the page of each outing.
By taxi. Most visitors drive or take a taxi to the base. If you come by taxi, agree on the way back before the driver leaves you, especially for an evening outing. The camp sits away from the road, and it is simpler to have the return settled than to look for a ride after dark.
With a transfer. If you would rather deal with neither, a return transfer from your hotel or riad in Marrakech can be added when you book, for a fee. Say so at the time of booking: we confirm the price before you pay anything, and the transfer appears on your booking as its own line rather than as a surprise at the end.
Is there a bus from Marrakech to Agafay?
No, there is no public bus from Marrakech to the Agafay desert. Without a car, the way to get there is a taxi, or a transfer from your hotel or riad added to the booking of your outing.
The transfer is booked together with the outing, so there is nothing else to arrange, and you can pay at the base, in cash, or online with PayPal: a 30% deposit or the full amount.
What does an Agafay desert day trip look like?
An Agafay desert day trip takes anything from half a day to a whole afternoon and evening, depending on the outing you choose. The times below are the time spent on the plateau; add the 45-minute drive each way.
| Outing | Time at Agafay | When it starts |
|---|---|---|
| 1-hour quad or buggy ride | About 1 h 30, briefing included | 10 am, noon or 4 pm (5 pm in summer) |
| 1-hour camel ride | About 1 h 10 | 10 am, noon or 4 pm (5 pm in summer); arrive 15 minutes early |
| 2-hour quad ride | About 2 h 30 | 10 am, noon or 4 pm (5 pm in summer) |
| Quad and dinner, camel ride and dinner | 4 h | 4 pm (5 pm in summer) |
| Dinner with live music | 4 h | 4 pm or 6 pm (5 pm or 8 pm in summer) |
| 1-hour quad, camel and Moroccan meal | 4 h | 4 pm (5 pm in summer) |
| 2-hour quad, camel and sunset dinner | 5 h | 4 pm (5 pm in summer) |
Half a day. A one- or two-hour ride, or an hour on camelback, fits into a morning or an afternoon: about three hours from Marrakech and back for the shortest outings, a little over four for the two-hour quad ride. You are back in the city with the rest of the day free.
A full day out. The 1-hour quad, camel and Moroccan meal puts the three on one site for four hours, with no transfer between them. It leaves at 4 pm, or 5 pm in summer: the meal is dinner and you finish after dark.
Sunset. The same trio also runs as the sunset dinner, with the same afternoon departure but two hours of quad instead of one, so five hours in all: the camels come after the quad, and dinner is served once the sun is down.
An evening with dinner. If you want the desert without riding, a dinner in the desert takes about four hours at the camp: mint tea on arrival, then a Moroccan meal at low tables under the tents. The dinner show has live music through the meal; the camel ride and dinner adds an hour on camelback first. Every one of our evenings ends with a return to Marrakech the same night; we do not offer overnight stays.
What time should you leave Marrakech for Agafay?
Leave Marrakech at least 45 minutes before the departure time on your confirmation, and a little earlier if you want some margin. For the camel ride, we ask you to be at the base fifteen minutes before your departure time.
Beyond that, the time of day matters more than the exact hour. Morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable. In summer, between roughly noon and four, the plateau is hard work — the late departures exist for that reason. Spring and autumn are comfortable all day; winter days are mild and clear, but the evenings are cold.
The end of the day is the reason most people choose Agafay, because pale stone takes low light well. Our afternoon outings, sunset ones included, leave at a fixed hour: 4 pm, or 5 pm from 1 April to 20 September. If you drive yourself, leave Marrakech about 45 minutes before; with the optional transfer, the pickup at your hotel is one hour before the start, at 3 pm, or 4 pm in summer. The time is GMT (UTC+0), the time of Morocco since 20 September 2026; it does not change in summer or during Ramadan.
Agafay at sunset has the sunset time for every month. The confirmation you receive carries the departure time for your date.
What should you bring on a day trip to Agafay?
Bring closed shoes and sunglasses first: the tracks are dusty, and the light off pale rock is harsh even in winter. Then:
- Clothes you do not mind getting dirty, and something to cover your face against the dust — a scarf or a buff.
- A hat and sun cream. There is little shade on the plateau in any season.
- Water in summer. From June to September you will want more than you think.
- A warm layer if your outing ends in the evening, even in July. The plateau is open and dry, and the temperature drops quickly once the sun is down; in December and January, nights in Marrakech average 6 to 7 °C.
- Cash. Outings are paid at the base before the start, in dirhams or foreign currency, unless you paid online with PayPal. There is no card payment at the base.
What to wear for quad biking in Agafay goes through it piece by piece, season by season.
What is there to do in the Agafay desert?
In the Agafay desert you can drive a quad or a buggy, ride a camel, and eat a Moroccan dinner at a camp — separately, or combined in one outing.
- Quad biking, for one hour or two, one machine per rider. No licence and no experience are needed; drivers must be 16 or over.
- Buggy driving, two seats side by side. A driving licence is required to drive a buggy.
- Camel rides, an hour at a walking pace, the animals led by a handler on foot.
- Dinner at the camp, some evenings with live music.
- Combined outings of four or five hours: a quad ride, a camel walk and a meal in one programme, including the sunset version.
Every departure starts with a safety briefing, and a guide stays with the group from start to finish. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start. The full list, with prices and the next free dates, is on the Agafay desert page.
