This is our full day at Agafay: the two machines and the meal, in the order that makes sense on the ground. It leaves once a day, in the afternoon, and the whole of this page is about what that means for the day.
The afternoon departure
The day starts at 4 pm, or 5 pm in summer (1 April to 20 September). The meal is dinner, served under the tents after the camel ride. The day ends after dark and asks for a warm layer. The sunset version has the same afternoon departure, but two hours of quad instead of one, so it lasts five hours instead of four.
Three things, one site
The tracks, the camels and the camp share the same ground. There is no transfer between the three, no second meeting point to find and no waiting on a vehicle between activities. It is what allows four hours to hold together rather than turning into three appointments.
One hour of quad
One machine per rider, with a helmet handed out and adjusted at the base. The briefing covers the controls, braking and the spacing to keep on the track, in English, French or Spanish, and a practice loop on flat ground comes before the route. No driving licence is required and no experience is expected. Drivers must be 16 or over; a child rides as a passenger behind an adult from the age of 6, and that age applies to the whole outing, camel ride and meal included. One hour on the tracks with one stop, a guide riding with the group throughout. The 2-hour quad, camel and sunset dinner has two hours of quad and lasts five hours.
An hour on camelback
Then the pace changes completely. The camels walk in a train led by a handler on foot: there is nothing to steer and nothing to learn, and the handler helps you on and off. About an hour — enough to see the same ground at the other extreme of speed, which is the argument for taking both in one day rather than one of them twice.
The meal
Under the tents, at low tables: soup, salads, a main dish — tagine or couscous — and fruit, with mint tea and water at the table. Drinks other than tea and water are not included. Tell us about a special diet when you book rather than on the day; vegetarian and allergy requests go to the kitchen and we confirm what can be prepared beforehand.
What to wear, paying and cancelling
Closed shoes and sunglasses — the tracks are dusty. Bring a layer: the Agafay loses its heat quickly once the sun is down.
