See dates and pricesThe Agafay desert is the closest desert to Marrakech: a stone desert 45 minutes by road to the south-west, towards Lalla Takerkoust. Quad Marrakech runs quad, buggy and camel outings and desert dinners there from one meeting point, Laarissa El Mokhtar; the shortest, the 1-hour camel ride, costs €20 per person. No flight, no overnight, no long transfer — which is why a desert afternoon fits inside a three-day trip to the city.
It is also stone, not sand. Pale folded hills, dry riverbeds, the High Atlas standing behind them with snow on the tops into spring. The orange dunes people picture are in the Sahara, nine hours away by road.

It depends on what you came for, and it is better to know before you book.
It is worth it if you have a day or less, want to leave the city for open space, and like the idea of doing something out there — driving a quad or a buggy, walking with camels, eating outside as the light goes. The landscape is wide and quiet, and it is close enough that the trip does not eat your holiday.
It is not what you want if you picture a sea of sand dunes. Agafay has none. For dunes you need the Sahara, which means at least two nights away from Marrakech. Agafay or the Sahara sets the two side by side, honestly.
The ground is what makes Agafay work: firm, open stone, with tracks that go somewhere. Our quad, buggy and camel rides there share one meeting point on the plateau.
Quad biking — one hour or two, one machine per driver. No licence needed, and no experience either.
Buggy driving — two seats side by side, priced per vehicle. A driving licence is required to drive a buggy.
Camel rides — an hour at a walking pace, led by a handler on foot.
Dinner in the desert — a Moroccan dinner at the camp, some with live music.
Combined outings — a quad ride, a camel walk and a meal in one programme of four or five hours, including a sunset version.
The outings are listed further down this page, each with its price and its next free dates.
Time of year. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. High summer is hot in the middle of the day — the late departures exist for that reason. Winter days are mild and clear, and the High Atlas often carries snow.
Time of day. Morning and late afternoon. The end of the day is the reason most people choose Agafay: pale stone takes low light well. But sunset moves by more than two hours through the year, from about half past five in winter to after half past seven in June — Agafay at sunset has the time for each month.
Once the sun is down, it gets cold quickly, whatever the season.
Forty-five minutes by road from central Marrakech, heading south-west. The road is fine for any car. There is no public bus to Agafay.
If you would rather not drive, a transfer from your hotel or riad can be added when you book, for a fee: it appears as its own line, and it is not included in the activity price. The Agafay desert from Marrakech covers the trip in more detail.
Closed shoes and sunglasses: the tracks are dusty. Clothes you do not mind getting dirty, a hat and sun cream — there is little shade in any season. A warm layer if your outing ends in the evening, even in July. What to wear for quad biking goes into it piece by piece.
Every departure starts with a safety briefing and a practice loop before anyone drives, helmets are fitted at the base, and a guide stays with the group from start to finish. Quad drivers must be 16 or over; passengers can ride from the age of 6, with a responsible adult. Quad and buggy safety says what we provide and what is up to you.
You book directly with the operator, with no agency in between. You can book without paying anything online and pay in cash at the base (dirhams or other currencies), or pay online with PayPal: a 30% deposit or the full amount. Cards are not accepted at the base. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start, and anything you paid online is refunded.

The Agafay desert is forty-five minutes by road from central Marrakech, heading south-west towards Lalla Takerkoust. It is a day trip, and a short one: no flight, no overnight and no long transfer, which is why a desert afternoon fits inside a three-day stay in the city.
No, there are no sand dunes in the Agafay desert near Marrakech. Agafay is a rocky desert of pale folded hills and dry riverbeds, with the High Atlas behind. The orange dunes people picture are in the Sahara near Merzouga, around nine hours away by road. The dune where tea is served in the VIP pack is a natural dune of earth, not of sand.
Yes, a trip to the Agafay desert from Marrakech is worth it if you have a day or less and want open desert landscape, a ride and a meal outside the city. No, if what you want is a sea of sand dunes: that is the Sahara, and it needs at least two nights.
The best times of day to visit the Agafay desert are morning and late afternoon, for the heat as much as the light. Between roughly noon and four in summer, the plateau is hard work, and once the sun is down it gets cold quickly, whatever the season.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times of year to visit the Agafay desert near Marrakech. Summer is hot in the middle of the day, which is why the late departures exist. Winter days are mild and clear, but the evenings are cold.
Without a car, the way to reach the Agafay desert from Marrakech is a transfer from your hotel or riad, added when you book, for a fee; it is not included in the activity price. There is no public bus to Agafay.
Yes, you can do more than one activity in the Agafay desert on the same day: that is what the four- and five-hour outings are. They combine a quad ride, a camel walk and a meal in one programme rather than three bookings, including a sunset version.
No, you cannot stay overnight in the Agafay desert with us. Our evenings end with dinner at the camp and a return to Marrakech the same night. Some camps on the plateau do offer rooms under canvas.
