Proposing in the Agafay desert
Marriage proposal in Marrakech, in the Agafay desert: which outing to choose, how to time it with sunset, how to keep the surprise, what we cannot arrange.

A marriage proposal in Marrakech works well in the Agafay desert at the end of the day, when the light drops over the pale hills and the evening moves to the dinner table. Our outings give you the setting — a camel ride in the last light, a private dinner table with music and a fire show, or a balloon at sunrise — and you bring the ring and the words.
This guide goes through what each outing offers for a proposal, how to time it with the sunset, how to keep it a surprise, and, just as plainly, what we do not arrange. For the desert itself — the landscape, the distance and everything else there is to do — start with the Agafay desert.
Where can you propose in the desert near Marrakech?
In the Agafay desert, 45 minutes by road south-west of central Marrakech, towards Lalla Takerkoust. It is close enough for an afternoon and an evening, with a return to your hotel or riad the same night.
Know what you are picturing before you choose. Agafay is a stony desert of pale folded hills and dry riverbeds, not a sea of sand dunes, with the High Atlas standing behind it, snow on the tops into spring. At the end of the day, the pale stone takes the low light well, and once the sun has gone the sky over the camp gets properly dark.
If the picture in your head is orange sand dunes, that is the Sahara, near Merzouga: about nine hours by road, and at least two nights away from Marrakech. A proposal there is a different trip altogether.
Which of our outings suits a marriage proposal in Marrakech?
Four of our outings lend themselves to a proposal. They differ mainly in two things: when the moment falls, and how private it is.
| Outing | When | Length | How private |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIP pack: quad, camel and dinner | Meeting at the base at 4 pm (5 pm in summer) | 4 h 15 | Private dinner table in a quiet restaurant; the rest with the group |
| 2-hour quad, camel and sunset dinner | 4 pm (5 pm in summer) | 5 h | Shared camp, low tables under the tents |
| Camel ride and dinner | 4 pm (5 pm in summer) | 4 h | Shared camp, low tables under the tents |
| Hot air balloon flight | Sunrise, pickup between 4:00 and 6:00 | About 40 min in the air | Shared basket, 19 passengers at most |
The VIP pack is the one most suited to a proposal, because it is the only one with a table of your own. An hour on a 350 cc quad comes first, then 45 to 60 minutes on a camel, led by a handler on foot. The ride ends on a dune with a 360° view over the desert, where a welcome tea is served with dried fruit and Moroccan pastries. Dinner follows at a private table in a quiet restaurant: four salads, a main course of your choice, seasonal fruit and dessert, with music and a fire show. The dune where the tea is served is a natural dune of earth, not of sand: Agafay remains a stone desert.
The 2-hour quad, camel and sunset dinner is built around the evening: two hours of quad, a camel ride at the end of the day, then dinner under the tents after dark. The camel ride is the quiet part of it — nothing to steer, a handler leading on foot, the hills changing colour.
The camel ride and dinner is the shorter, gentler evening: mint tea on arrival, about an hour on camelback while there is still light, then a Moroccan dinner at the camp. No quad, and no dust on your clothes before the moment.
The hot air balloon flight trades the sunset for the sunrise: about forty minutes in the air over the plain outside the city, as the sun comes up. It is shared, and it depends on the wind — more on that below.
How do you time a proposal with the sunset in Agafay?
Start from the date. Sunset in Agafay moves by more than two hours through the year: about 5:30 pm in mid-December, about 6:40 pm in mid-March and mid-September, about 7:40 pm in mid-June and mid-July. The month-by-month table is in Agafay desert at sunset.
Then match the outing to it:
- 2-hour quad, camel and sunset dinner: the start is fixed at 4 pm, or 5 pm from 1 April to 20 September, so the camel ride falls at the end of the day. The time on your confirmation is the one to trust.
- VIP pack: the meeting time is fixed at 4 pm (5 pm in summer), and the programme puts the tea on the dune about two and a half hours later, around 6:30 pm (7:30 pm in summer). In the cooler months, that is just after sunset; in summer it is close to it.
- The clock: Morocco is on GMT (UTC+0), and the time does not change in summer or during Ramadan.
If a particular time matters to you, say so when you book.
How do you keep the proposal a surprise?
Book it yourself, in your own name. The confirmation and the voucher go to the email address you give, and the phone number is used only if we need to reach you on the day — so give your own.
Then tell us. The booking form has a field called “Anything we should know”: write there that you plan to propose, and the moment you have in mind. That way the team knows what the evening is for, and we can tell you before the day what is possible. If you think of something later, message us on WhatsApp with your booking reference; the number is on the contact page.
A few more details help:
- You can pay nothing online. The outing is paid at the base, in cash (dirhams or foreign currency), before departure — keep it in your own pocket — or online with PayPal: a 30% deposit or the full amount.
- A desert dinner needs no excuse. An evening in Agafay is reason enough for the trip; you do not have to invent one.
- Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start, if plans change.
Can someone photograph or film the proposal?
We do not promise a photographer. Photos and video taken on site are not included in the price of the outings. A photo pack and video are available on request for the desert outings, not for the balloon flight: ask when you book, mention that it is for a proposal, and we tell you what is possible for your date.
If you would rather handle it yourselves, the light does most of the work at this hour. Put the sun behind you for silhouettes, turn round to catch the light on the hills and the Atlas, and keep shooting after the sun has gone — the sky holds its colour for a while.
What do you need to plan yourself?
The ring, the words and the moment. We give you the place and the evening; the rest is yours, and it is better that way.
- Where the ring travels. On the VIP pack and the sunset outing, you ride a quad before the moment itself: keep the ring in a zipped pocket, away from the dust.
- When to ask. Not on camelback: wait until you are both on the ground, on the dune or at the table, where nothing can fall onto the stones.
- What to wear. The Agafay loses its heat quickly once the sun is down, and you finish the evening sitting still. Bring a warm layer in every season, and a proper coat from November to March.
- Food. On the VIP pack, the pastilla has to be ordered 24 hours ahead; a special diet is best mentioned when you book.
- Getting there. A return transfer from your hotel or riad can be added when you book, for a fee; for the balloon flight it is required.
What can we not promise for a desert proposal?
Some things are simply not part of what we offer, and it is better to know now than on the night:
- Decorations. No flowers, petals, signs or special set-up on any outing.
- A private camp. The camp and its tents are shared with the other guests of the evening. The one private setting is the VIP pack dinner table; the tea on the dune and the rides are with the group. A private group is available on request: a departure reserved for your group alone (vehicles, guide and time), priced by hand, with no minimum number of people. It does not make the camp private.
- A private balloon. The basket is shared, and the pilot decides on the morning whether the wind allows a flight. If it does not, you choose another morning or cancel at no cost — so plan the balloon early in your stay.
- Drinks beyond those listed. Each outing’s page says what is served at the table; other drinks are not included.
- The sky. We time the evening against the sunset, not against the clouds.
For anything not on this list and not on the pages of the outings, ask us: we tell you what is possible, and what is not, before you book.
