Marrakech weather month by month

Marrakech weather month by month: average highs and lows, rainfall, sunshine, sunrise and sunset, and the best time to visit — from 1991–2020 climate normals.

Marrakech has sunshine for most of the year, very hot summers and mild, dry winters. The city gets about 221 mm of rain a year, spread over some 29 days, and more than 3,200 hours of sun. The two things that change most through the year are the heat and the length of the day, and both matter as soon as you plan something outdoors.

This guide gives the averages for each month, measured at the Marrakech Menara weather station over 1991–2020, the sunrise and sunset times, and what they mean in practice — in the city and in the Agafay desert, 45 minutes away.

What is the weather like in Marrakech?

Marrakech has a hot semi-arid climate. Summers are long, dry and very hot: from June to September, average highs stay above 32 °C, and they reach 37 °C in July and August. Winters are short and mild by day — around 19 to 20 °C in the afternoon — but cold at night, when the average low drops to 6 or 7 °C.

Rain is scarce and seasonal. Almost all of it falls between October and April, in short spells rather than grey weeks. From June to August, a month often passes without a single rainy day.

Humidity is low for most of the year, which makes the summer heat drier but no less intense, and makes winter nights feel colder than the figures suggest.

When is the best time to visit Marrakech?

For warm, comfortable weather, go in spring (March to May) or autumn (October and November). Days are between 23 and 29 °C, nights are cool, and rain is occasional. April and October are the two most balanced months.

Summer (June to September) suits travellers who like the heat and plan around it: early starts, a long break at midday, and evenings outdoors.

Winter (December to February) is mild and sunny by day, with few crowds and cold nights. It is a good season for the city and for afternoons in the desert, as long as you pack for the evening.

Weather in the Agafay desert compared with Marrakech

The Agafay desert lies 45 minutes south-west of the city and shares its climate: the same seasons, the same dry summers, the same winter rain. What changes is the exposure. The plateau is open, with very little shade, so the sun is harder by day, and once the sun goes down it gets cold quickly, whatever the season.

That is why the time of day matters as much as the month. Agafay at sunset gives the sunset time for each month and the fixed afternoon departures, and outings on the plateau run in every season.

Rain in Marrakech and the Agafay desert

Rain is the exception rather than the rule: about 29 days a year with at least 1 mm, most of them between November and April. It usually comes as a short shower or a stormy afternoon rather than a wet week.

In the Agafay desert, the ground is firm pale stone rather than sand, so the tracks stay usable after rain. A wet morning does not usually mean a cancelled afternoon; if you book with us and the forecast worries you, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start.

What to pack for the weather in Marrakech

  • Spring and autumn: light clothes for the day, a warm layer for the evening.
  • Summer: light, covering clothes, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream; water at all times.
  • Winter: a jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings, and warmer clothes still for an evening in the desert.

What to wear quad biking in Agafay goes through the kit for an outing on the plateau, piece by piece.
